WIN Waste Innovations is aware of the importance of convenient waste disposal for both residential and commercial facilities. Our solid waste transfer station is open to the public. It is an intermediary facility that accepts and briefly holds solid waste before transferring to long-distance vehicles that ship solid waste to landfills and other treatment disposal facilities. Since opening in 1976, WIN Waste Innovations has worked to optimize the solid waste disposal and recycling process. Residents and commercial facilities in Licking County and surrounding areas are encouraged to drop off various solid waste items at our waste transfer station.

What Is a Transfer Station?

A waste transfer station is a convenient industrial facility where solid waste from municipalities is staged during its journey to a landfill or waste-to-energy facility. Many activities occur at waste transfer stations, from unloading garbage trucks and pre-screening waste materials to removing inappropriate items and preparing waste for transportation. Waste transfer stations provide municipalities with numerous benefits, some of which including:

  • Fuel savings

  • Reduced air pollution

  • Convenient drop-off locations for citizens

  • Minimized traffic congestion

  • Improved safety at landfills and waste-to-energy facilities

  • Encourages adequate screening of waste items

What to Expect

Each transfer station can vary in day-to-day operations depending on the type of waste collected and the overall purpose of the facility. Below are a few standard practices of waste transfer stations, so you know what to expect during your visit.

  • Arrivals and scale: Inbound commercial vehicles are immediately directed to the scale house upon arrival. Employees in the scale house will weigh each load and assess any tippage fees. Patrons that wish to drop off solid waste at a transfer station will be directed to a separate queue and scale.

  • Tipping, processing, and reloading: All vehicles are unloaded at the main transfer building, meaning solid waste will be dropped into a designated area such as a pit, floor, or other vehicle. Employees will screen your waste for unauthorized materials and compact the waste if needed.

  • Facility: Each waste transfer facility ranges in design and layout, but commonly you can expect to see designated areas for scaling, tippage, transfer, vehicle queuing, outbound transfer trailers, and unauthorized garbage.

  • Essential equipment: Along with scales, you will see a range of other equipment during your visit to the transfer station. Equipment can include but is not limited to front-end loaders, cranes, conveyors, walking floors, and compactors.

  • Staffing: We have numerous employees at our waste transfer station, each with a different responsibility. All of our employees have a crucial role in proper waste disposal. These positions range from customer service, scale house operators, traffic controllers, equipment operators, and maintenance mechanics.
